Legal help in India, country by country

The Indian law is the same wherever you live, but the way you sign documents, the speed of the courier and whether a foreign judgment can be enforced all depend on your country. Choose yours for the details that apply to you.

Updated Reviewed by our legal team

We act for clients in about 40 countries across the Americas, Europe, the Gulf, Asia Pacific and Africa. Each country guide covers the questions that change from one country to another: whether documents are signed with an apostille or attested at the Indian embassy or consulate, whether a court judgment from that country can be executed directly in India under section 44A CPC or needs a fresh suit, and which matters clients there most often bring to us.

If your country is not listed, we can still help. The steps are the same: a video consultation, documents signed before a notary or the Indian mission where you live, and our team handling the work in India. See how we work or contact us with a short note on your matter.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my country matter for an Indian legal matter?

Mainly for three things: how your documents are legalised for use in India, whether a judgment from your country's courts can be executed directly in India, and practical points such as time zones and courier times.

Which countries use an apostille for Indian documents?

Countries where the Hague Apostille Convention is in force with India, such as the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and most of the EU. Germany has objected to India's accession, so the apostille does not apply between India and Germany.

What if my country is not an apostille country?

Your document is usually notarised or authenticated locally and then attested by the Indian embassy or consulate, or signed directly before an Indian consular officer. This applies, for example, in the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait.

Can a judgment from my country be enforced in India?

If your country is a notified reciprocating territory, such as the UK, Singapore or the UAE, the judgment can be executed under section 44A CPC. Otherwise, for example from the USA or Canada, a fresh suit on the judgment is needed.

My country is not on the list. Can you still help?

Yes. The country pages cover where most of our clients live, but the process works from anywhere with a notary or an Indian mission and an internet connection.
