Repatriation of Funds for clients in the UK
In short

A UK-resident NRI or OCI holder can remit up to USD 1 million per financial year from an NRO account, covering property sale proceeds, inheritance and other Indian balances, after tax and with Forms 15CA and 15CB. Money traceable to earlier remittances from abroad can often be sent through the NRE route. We assemble the legal and tax file so your Indian bank processes the transfer smoothly.

Repatriation of Funds from the UK: how it works

We trace the source of the money and gather documents: the sale deed and purchase deed for property, tax deduction certificates, the will or succession certificate for inheritance, and bank statements. The chartered accountant certifies on Form 15CB that tax has been paid or is not payable, and Form 15CA is filed online. Your bank then processes the remittance to your UK account.

Banks vary in what they ask for, so we prepare one consolidated file. Where the property was purchased with foreign funds or NRE money, sale proceeds of up to two residential properties can be repatriated outside the USD 1 million limit. On the UK side, report the gain or income to HMRC as required; the India-UK treaty gives credit for Indian tax.

What clients in the UK should know

  • Inheritance received from India is not subject to UK income tax, but UK inheritance tax rules may apply to the estate of a UK-resident deceased.
  • The USD 1 million limit applies per financial year, April to March, so large amounts can be spread across years.
  • Remittances to the UK arrive as sterling; agree the exchange rate with your bank in advance for large sums.
