Marriage Registration for clients in Ireland
In short

A marriage solemnised in India can be registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act or the state's compulsory registration law, depending on the ceremony and the couple. The certificate is then apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs for use in Ireland. Where one spouse is already in Ireland, many registrars allow registration with appearance by video or through a later joint appearance; requirements vary by state.

Document route
Irish notary public, then apostille from the Department of Foreign Affairs
Time difference
IST is 4h30 (Irish summer time) to 5h30 (winter) ahead
Hindu marriages
Section 8, Hindu Marriage Act 1955
Civil marriage
Special Marriage Act 1954

Marriage Registration from Ireland: how it works

We identify the right registrar and statute: under the Hindu Marriage Act registration is of an already solemnised Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist marriage, while the Special Marriage Act requires notice and a waiting period for a civil marriage. We prepare the application with photographs, proof of age and address, ceremony evidence such as photographs and invitation card, and witness details. The spouse in Ireland may sign affidavits before an Irish notary with an apostille.

Once the certificate is issued, we arrange state-level verification and the MEA apostille so it can be submitted to Irish immigration authorities or for spouse residence permissions. If the couple instead marry in Ireland, they must give the civil registrar advance notice, usually three months, and the Irish certificate is then apostilled by the Department of Foreign Affairs for use in India, for example to update an Indian passport.

What clients in Ireland should know

  • Irish immigration authorities generally expect a civil marriage certificate, not only religious ceremony documents.
  • Marriages in Ireland require notice to a registrar well in advance, so couples planning an Irish wedding should start early.
  • An apostilled Irish marriage certificate can be used to update Indian passports and property records.

Questions from clients in Ireland

Can we register our marriage if one of us is in Ireland?

Often yes, with personal appearance by one spouse and video or later appearance by the other, depending on the registrar.

Is a religious marriage certificate enough for Irish immigration?

Usually not; a government-issued marriage certificate with an apostille is preferred.

How long does registration take?

Under the Hindu Marriage Act, often a few weeks; under the Special Marriage Act, at least the 30-day notice period plus processing.
