If you married in India and now live in Portugal, or plan to bring your spouse there, you need the marriage registered in India under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act or the law that applies, then apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs. A certified Portuguese translation is usually required. If you have not registered yet, both spouses normally appear before the marriage registrar, but a delayed registration can often be organised with one trip.

Marriage Registration from Portugal: how it works
We check which law your marriage falls under and the state where it was solemnised, because each state runs its own registration rules and portal. For a Hindu marriage already celebrated, registration is often possible later with photographs, invitation card, witnesses and identity proof. Some states require both spouses in person; a few accept video verification in limited cases. If you plan to marry in India while living in Portugal, the Special Marriage Act needs a notice period of thirty days and residence of one party in the district, so timing has to be planned.
Once you hold the certificate, it is attested by the state home or general administration department as required and then apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs through its authorised outsourcing agencies. In Portugal, a certified translator converts it into Portuguese for AIMA or the Conservatoria do Registo Civil. If you married in Portugal instead, the Portuguese certificate is apostilled by the Procuradoria-Geral da Republica and can be used in India for passport, OCI and property records.
What clients in Portugal should know
- Goa has compulsory civil registration of marriages, and a Goan marriage recorded with the Civil Registrar produces a certificate Portuguese registries know well.
- Names must match passports exactly; small spelling differences between the certificate and passports cause delays at AIMA.
- A marriage certificate for a Portuguese nationality application through marriage may need to show the marriage has lasted the required period, so date errors matter.

Questions from clients in Portugal
Can I register my Indian marriage from Portugal without travelling?
Sometimes. It depends on the state and the law. Where personal appearance is mandatory we plan a single short visit and prepare everything beforehand.
Does a marriage registered at the Lisbon embassy count in India?
Marriages under the Foreign Marriage Act 1969 can be solemnised before an Indian marriage officer abroad and are valid in India. Ask the embassy whether it currently offers this service.
Is a religious certificate from a temple enough for Portugal?
Usually not. Portuguese authorities expect a government-issued registration certificate with an apostille, not a temple or gurdwara certificate.
