A marriage solemnised in India can be registered in India under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Anand Marriage Act for Sikh marriages, the Special Marriage Act or the applicable state law, and Punjab has its own compulsory marriage registration law. The marriage certificate is then apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs and translated into Italian for transcription at your Comune or use in a family reunification application.

Marriage Registration from Italy: how it works
For a marriage already held in Punjab, we arrange registration with the marriage registrar, which usually needs the couple's identity and age proof, photographs, proof of the ceremony and witnesses. Where one spouse is already in Italy, many registrars require both to appear; some allow alternative procedures, so we check the local practice before you book travel. After registration, the certificate is verified by the state authorities and apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs through its outsourced centres. A sworn Italian translation is then prepared for the Comune or the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione.
If you plan to marry in Italy, the Italian registrar needs a nulla osta, a certificate of no impediment, from the Indian Embassy or Consulate General, which the Indian mission issues after its own checks, including a public notice in some cases. An Italian civil marriage between Indian nationals can later be recorded in Indian records as needed. If you married in Italy and want to register under the Special Marriage Act in India, we advise on whether the Foreign Marriage Act or a fresh registration fits your situation.
What clients in Italy should know
- Italian family reunification applications for a spouse in India depend on a registered, apostilled and translated marriage certificate; an unregistered religious ceremony is not enough.
- Names should be spelt identically on Indian passports, the marriage certificate and Italian residence papers; even a missing middle name can delay transcription in Italy.
- Couples married under the Anand Marriage Act can register the marriage as a Sikh marriage where the state rules provide for it, which some families prefer for religious reasons.

Questions from clients in Italy
Does my husband need to come from Italy for registration in Punjab?
Usually both spouses must appear before the registrar. We check whether the local registrar offers any alternative for a spouse abroad before you plan travel.
Who apostilles an Indian marriage certificate for Italy?
The Ministry of External Affairs, after verification by the state government department responsible for that document.
Can we marry at the Indian Embassy in Rome?
Marriages under the Foreign Marriage Act can be solemnised by Indian marriage officers abroad in limited cases. Most couples instead marry civilly in Italy with a nulla osta.
